Today, March 14, 2013 the European Parliament adopted the “Report on the protection of public health from endocrine disruptors”. The report was drafted by the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Åsa Westlund, a Swedish member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. The report was adopted with a large majority. The adoption of the report is thought to be a clear message to the European Commission to systematically overhaul EU legislation and policy regarding endocrine disruptors. This would include a systematic review of food contact materials legislation. The vote is also understood to be a response to the recently published WHO/UNEP report “State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals 2012”  stating that the uncertainties and knowledge gaps on endocrine disrupting chemicals are too important to ignore.
