On March 21 and 22, 2013 a conference entitled “Development of new safe polymer nanomaterials for food packaging (PNFP) and development of strategies to identify any critical interaction of PNFP with food”  took place in Wädenswil, Switzerland. The scientific meeting was part of the COST action “Ecosustainable food packaging based on polymer nanomaterials”. Members of the COST action presented their research in the area of polymer nanomaterials and elaborated on applications and risks thereof. Researchers from all over Europe presented topics such as improved barrier properties of nanoparticle enhanced and the application of antimicrobial nanomaterials. Also, chemical risks arising from bisphenol A (BPA) exposure from polycarbonate plastics and ethical considerations regarding food packaging irradiation were discussed. Migration related risks of nanomaterials were not addressed at this event.

This COST Action is part of the larger COST framework, a Europe wide coordination effort of nationally funded research.
