On December 17, 2015 the European Chemicals Agency announced that it has added five new substances of very high concern (SVHCs) to the Candidate List. The newly listed substances are nitrobenzene (CAS 98-95-3), 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(5-chlorobenzotriazol-2-yl)phenol (UV-327, CAS 3864-99- 1), 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(tert-butyl)-6-(sec-butyl)phenol (UV-350, CAS 36437-37-3), 1,3-propanesultone (CAS 1120-71-4), and perfluorononan-1-oic-acid and its sodium and ammonium salts (CAS 375-95-1, 21049-39-8, 4149-60-4). They were classified as SVHCs due to their carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction, mutagenic, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT), or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) properties. UV-327 and UV-350 are UV-protection agents reported to be used in “coatings, plastics, rubber and cosmetics.” The Candidate List now contains 168 SVHCs.
