On June 28, 2013 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a press release announcing the extension of the adoption of the scientific opinion on bisphenol A (BPA) to 2014. The reason for the delay is the introduction of a two-stage public consultation process. During the first stage of the public consultation from mid-July to mid-September 2013, EFSA will consult with stakeholders on the draft exposure assessment. In a second stage during early 2014, stakeholders may comment on the human health and toxicology aspects of EFSA’s risk assessment. In its press release, EFSA states that the agency requires more time to evaluate key health effects identified in animal studies and their relevance for humans.
