According to an article published on October 27, 2014 by the industry news provider European Plastics News, plastics regulation in the European Union will be influenced by four commissioners during the next legislative period. The key responsibility for plastic food contact materials (FCMs) will lie with the new health commissioner Vytenis Adriukaitis, who will be in charge of FCMs and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Plastics recycling will be supervised by the Maltese Kamenu Vella, who strives for simplification of environmental legislation. Commissioners Elzbieta Bienkowska and Carlos Moedas will be responsible for the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the European research funding program Horizon 2020, respectively. The work of the new commissioners is scheduled to begin on November 1, 2014.
