On January 26, 2016 the non-profit organization Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) published a press release on chemicals in food contact materials (FCMs) on the occasion of the EU workshop on FCMs hosted by the European Parliament on the same date (FPF reported). In their article, HEAL outlines the general aspect of chemical migration from FCMs into food and in particular the health concerns regarding substances of very high concern (SVHCs) and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in FCMs. Further, HEAL addresses the occurrence of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) where chemical identity and structure is mostly unknown.
To improve the situation, HEAL calls for:
1) Proper regulation of all types of FCMs at EU level, and
2) prohibition of SVHCs and EDCs in FCMs.

On the same occasion, non-profit organization CHEM Trust released a policy briefing on regulation of FCMs (FPF reported).
