People are exposed to more than 85 000 chemicals from consumer products. Thus, the risk posed by chemical exposure needs to be evaluated in order to ensure chemical safety. Chemical risk assessment quantifies the risk for health damage occurring in a population due to chemical exposure, and is also used to evaluate food contact substances. In its new article, the Food Packaging Forum summarizes the four steps of risk assessment: 1) hazard identification, 2) dose response assessment, 3) exposure assessment and 4) hazard characterization.
