In an article published on October 9, 2014 by the industry news provider Food Production Daily, journalist Jenny Eagle reports on the Food Packaging Forum’s workshop entitled “Hazardous chemicals in food contact materials?” held in Zurich, Switzerland on the same day. Eagle details that at the workshop, Thomas Backhaus, professor at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden argued that chemical risk assessment is driven by the use of chemicals rather than by chemical properties. He stressed the importance of recognizing cocktail effects and chronic long-term delayed effects in chemical risk assessments. Further, Backhaus said that for the vast majority of chemicals there is only a vague understanding of how they interact in real conditions. The workshop was attended by participants from academia, the food packaging supply chain, regulatory agencies and enforcement authorities.
