In November 2013, France published the results of the first round of its mandatory nanomaterial reporting scheme. From January 1 to June 30, 2013 the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health (ANSES) collected information from nanomaterial manufacturers, importers and dsitributors under decree n° 2012-232 of February 17, 2013. The resulting report estimates between 243 and 422 substances to be covered by the 3409 statements ANSES received from 933 rapporteurs. After the exclusion of erroneously declared materials, 2776 nanomaterial declarations remained for analysis. The majority of declarations were made by “importers”, “distributors”, and “users and distributors”. ANSES concludes from the data that 142 676 tons of nanomaterials were imported and 279 439 tons were produced in France in 2012. The full registry is available on the registry’s web page R-nano.fr.
