On October 14, 2013 the Instituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), the Italian Institute of Health, held the kick-off meeting to the new European Project “Endocrine Disruptors in silico / in vitro – Evaluation and Substitution for Industrial Applications” (LIFE- EDESIA) in Rome, Italy. The Food Packaging Forum is 1 of 3 non-profit organizations that are stakeholders in LIFE-EDESIA. The project has the objective to find alternatives to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) of very high concern based on their endocrine disruption effects, production volume and potential exposure of the general population. The project aims to find substitutions for phthalates, bisphenols and parabens. Both phthalates and bisphenols are also authorized for use in food contact materials (FCMs) under Regulation EC 10/2011. The project is to compare potential alternatives using in silico and in vitro methods and to assess the migration of chemicals from prototypes containing the new alternatives. The project shall not only identify potential alternatives but also demonstrate the feasibility of substitution in industrial applications. A list of 15 potential substitutive chemicals is envisaged for the end of the project. LIFE-EDESIA is funded under the LIFE12 program and scheduled for completion in June 2016.
