Non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) have been a recent focus of the debate surrounding food packaging. They are present in food contact material, but have not been added for a technical reason. Therefore they are often unknown to consumers and even manufactures. However, manufacturers are obliged to ensure NIAS safety under European food contact regulation. The FPF publishes a report summarizing the origins, risk assessment and regulation of NIAS.
