A new scientific study published June 6, 2013 in the peer-reviewed journal Trends in Food Science and Technology reviews the application of bioplastics in food packaging. Bioplastics are based on biobased resources, or biodegradable and/or compostable plastics but their application has been limited due to poor functionality. Peelman and colleagues elucidate approaches to improve the functionality of bioplastics using coating, blending, and chemical/physical modifications, which could extend their application in food packaging. However, the limitations of bioplastics are not limited to poor functionality. Of further concern is potential migration of substances present in bioplastics into food (FPF article).
