Until July 12, 2013 the Nanotechnology Industries Association’s (NIA) members may provide feedback on the definition of nanomaterial as laid out in the Commission recommendation on the definition of nanomaterial (L 275/38). Meeting an internal deadline, NIA will compile the feedback and submit it to the European Commission’s (EC’s) review process.

The recommendation published by the European Commission on October 18, 2011 defines nanomaterial as a “material with any external dimensions in the nanoscale or having internal structure or surface structure in the nanoscale”. The definition shall be reviewed by December 2014 “in the light of experience and of scientific and technological developments”. The European Commission is consulting with industry and will require more detailed information by the end of 2013.
