The Austrian cooperative research and testing institute, OFI, is developing suitable test systems for the assessment of hormone active migrants from food contact materials. The project started in September 2010 and will last for 4 years. It is carried out in collaboration with private industry partners from the food packaging supply chain. During the first year various in vitro assays were established and validated for testing hormone activity of food packaging migrants. In addition, chemical analytical methods for more than 30 endocrine disrupting chemicals have been developed and validated. In a next step, whole migrate from food contact materials will be analyzed using a semi-quantitative method, and substances with estimated migration above 10 ppb (10 µg/L) will be subjected to further assessment and identification.
