An article published February 20, 2014 on the website of the Philippine Information Agency informs that the city of Cotabato is planning to ban plastics and styrofoam in the city. Based on an ordinance from November 2013 “selling and distribution of non-biodegradable plastic as secondary packaging material and non-biodegradable styrofoam as food and beverage containers” will be prohibited. The prohibition will also include non-biodegradable plastic bags that will have to be replaced by reusable bags or bags made out of alternative materials. The implementation is scheduled to start in May 2014 with a transition period of three years. The ordinance was issued with the aim to protect public health and the environment.
