The European Food Safety authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion on April 16, 2013 assessing the “Schoeller Arca Systems” process for the recycling of polypropylene and high density polyethylene crates for food contact (RECYC075). Material from the recycling process may be blended with virgin material or used at 100% to create new recycled multi-trip crates, boxes and containers. The Scientific Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) concluded that due to the closed loop, contamination with materials from non-food use can be excluded. The material may be used at room temperature or below for meat, whole fruit and vegetables packaging.
