On June 13, 2014 the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) published a press release announcing a German-French research cooperation investigating the effect of nanomaterials on the liver and intestines. The project “SolnanoTox” which started on March 1, 2014 shall facilitate the classification of the large number of nanomaterials according to uptake and exposure and will assess specific characteristics of nanomaterials for this purpose. Andreas Hensel, president of the institute states in the press release that the BfR is particularly interested in whether solubility is a determining factor for uptake and toxicity of nanomaterials.
