On February 23-24, 2015 different stakeholders involved along the supply chain of food contact materials (FCMs) met at the Food Contact Materials Safety and Compliance seminar in Brussels, Belgium. Topics discussed during the two-day meeting included the current legislation, risk assessment and safety management of FCMs. The event rendered the possibility for two round-table discussions about the recycling of post-consumer waste for FCMs and optimal information exchange within the supply chain. Further, a practical demonstration on how to perform an exposure assessment for FCMs was given. Legal consequences in the case of non-compliance were detailed for the U.S. and many European countries. Participants representing manufacturers of different types of non-regulated FCMs, such as paper and board, coatings, adhesives and printing inks, generally supported the future implementation of harmonized European regulations for these materials.
