On January 20, 2014 the non-governmental organization the Danish Ecological Council published a YouTube video on the successful replacement of hazardous chemicals, including phthalates, in consumer products. Phthalates are also used in food contact materials. The video features the voluntary replacement of phthalates in vinyl flooring by the flooring manufacturer Tarkett. Eline Aggerholm, chemicals policy officer at the Danish Ecological Council, states in a recent press release that the early, voluntary phase out of hazardous chemical provides companies with a competitive advantage. She states that “[t]hey get a head start on the market and the opportunity to promote themselves as green companies”.
