On October 17, 2013 the Food Packaging Forum will hold a workshop entitled “Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) for risk assessment of food contact material chemicals”. The workshop has a novel and unique approach: it will provide a thorough analysis of the TTC’s scientific foundation from the perspective of today’s state-of-the-science. Invited speakers will explain the assumptions and scientific facts forming the basis of the TTC concept. For example, the scientific evidence supporting the use of uncertainty factors in chemical risk assessment will be illustrated, and the relevance of current protocols for chronic toxicity testing for human health will be analyzed.

Further, current issues such as mixture toxicity and low dose effects will be reviewed with respect to their relevance for the TTC. Speakers from both sides of the Atlantic will present on the current and planned applications of the TTC in chemical risk assessment in the U.S. and the European Union (EU). The presentations will facilitate an in-depth understanding of the TTC concept’s scientific strengths and weaknesses. During an interactive discussion possible improvements to the TTC from a scientific perspective will be debated, and the planned application of the TTC in chemical risk assessment will be addressed.

The workshop is open for registration. Registration fees are CHF 150.- for regular participants and CHF 50.- for students.
