Sunshine Makers, a US manufacturer of cleaning detergents, has removed 2-butoxyethanol (CAS 111-76-2) from its products. 2-butoxyethanol is a glycol ether used as solvent in detergents, but also in food packaging printing inks (ESCO WG). Other US companies removed the compound from their products after the release of the ‘Household Hazards’ report by the NGO Women’s Voices for the Earth. The report had pointed to 2-butoxyethanol as a reproductive toxin which decreases fertility and body weight in mice.
