On July 5, 2016 the non-profit organization International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec) hosted a webinar for investors entitled “Endocrine Disruptors – A risk to your portfolio?.” Anna Lennquist, senior toxicologist at ChemSec, provided an overview of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including sources of exposure and associated adverse health effects, and discussed recent policy developments. Lisa Beavilan, investment manager at Impax Asset Manegement, explained how the investment firm identifies problematic chemicals as part of the process of evaluating companies. “Our strategy is to follow the precautionary principle; investors have really welcomed this strategy,” Beavilan stated. Malene Teller Blume, quality manager nonfood & social compliance at Coop Denmark, provided insights to the retailer’s efforts to phase-out hazardous chemicals such as EDCs in their products and highlighted the resulting financial benefits. “To work very actively with phase-out of hazardous chemicals is a good business strategy. Key is to inform the consumers. Then you can really earn respect and loyalty from your consumers,” Teller Blume shared. A video recording of the one-hour webinar is available on ChemSec’s website.
