According to an article published on April 24, 2014 by industry news provider Plastics News, the Chicago Health and Environmental Committee approved an ordinance banning the use of single-use plastic bags on April 24, 2014. The ordinance will now be voted on by the full City Council meeting. If adopted, the ban would exempt independent stores and restaurants. Franchises more than 10,000 ft2 and chains will have to implement the ban by August 2014, smaller franchises and chains with less than three locations will have another year to adapt to the ban.
