On December 2, 2013 the chemical producer Dow Chemical announced that it will separate from its chlorine business, including the epoxy business and units producing feedstock for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics, as reported in an article by the news agency Bloomberg. Epoxy resins and PVC plastics are also used in food contact materials (FCMs). The annual sales of the businesses to be spun off amount to $5 billion USD. It is not clear, whether Dow Chemical will sell, spin off or create a joint venture with the assets. In October, Dow Chemical sold its polypropylene (PP) assets. It attempted to sell its plastic additives business earlier this year, but offers were considered too low and the unit’s sale was cancelled.
