In an article published March 24, 2014 by the news provider Mother Jones, journalist Mariah Blake outlines the debate surrounding a U.S. Food and Drug Authority (FDA) study which concluded that bisphenol A (BPA) was safe (previously reported on by the FPF). Scientists working on the Consortium Linking Academic and Regulatory Insights on BPA Toxicity (CLARITY) project together with the FDA criticized the study as they believed the experiment had been carried out ineptly. In summer 2013, the agency reported that the laboratory had been contaminated with BPA, thereby contaminating all the negative controls. However, this fact was buried towards the end of the paper. One scientist stated to Mother Jones that the reporting of the study “borders on scientific misconduct”. Further, the CLARITY labs may also be contaminated with BPA, possibly calling future results into question. The scientists are concerned that the publication precludes any findings that may be published during the coming years. The CLARITY project aims to carry out experiments with different doses under GLP guidelines. The experiments are carried out on the FDA premises and tissue samples will be analyzed by both regulatory agents as well as academic scientists. This shall resolve the conflicts between academic and regulatory science regarding BPA’s safety and may also be informative for other chemicals.
