On Wednesday, April 10, 2013 U.S. Senator Lautenberg introduced a bill to Congress that shall make chemicals safer. The bill reforms the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). TSCA has not been updated since the 1970s. If passed, the bill will authorize regulators to evaluate the safety of flame retardants, phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) and other chemicals contained in consumer products, which were grandfathered into the legislation in 1958. The new provisions would enable EPA to collect health and safety information on chemicals, prioritize them based on risk, screen them for safety and require risk management. The reform bill was adopted by the Senate Committee in July 2012.

The industry association of chemical manufacturers, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) released a press statement in which it supports an update of TSCA. In the release ACC President and CEO Cal Dooley states that an updated TSCA should be based on sound science.
