On September 24, 2019, at 3:00 pm CEST (Central European Summer Time), the Food Packaging Forum (FPF) held a webinar on the in vitro toxicity and chemical composition of everyday plastic products. In this talk, guest speaker Lisa Zimmermann from the Goethe University Frankfurt presented the results of the recently published research study “Benchmarking the in vitro toxicity and chemical composition of plastic consumer products.” The study analyzed the overall toxicity present in everyday plastic products using a set of in vitro bioassays, which allowed for the comparison of the chemical toxicity of different plastic types as well as of food and non-food contact materials (FPF reported). Outcomes from the study provide insights into the individual substances found in plastic products including their type and origin.
Guest speaker Lisa Zimmermann studied biological sciences at the University of Konstanz with a focus on ecotoxicology, molecular toxicology, and biochemistry. Currently, she is completing her PhD thesis within the PlastX project in the Department of Aquatic Ecotoxicology at the Goethe University Frankfurt. In her research, she focuses on the toxicity and composition of chemicals used in and leaching out of plastic products.
