On October 14, 2020, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation announced the launch of a joint call from non-government organizations and businesses for the United Nations (UN) to establish a global treaty on plastic pollution. Outlined in a joint report written with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the organizations are “calling on all member states of the United Nations to commence negotiations on a global treaty on plastic pollution” citing that “the need for action is urgent, as is the need for governments and businesses across the plastic value chain to work together at an unprecedented scale.” A business call was also launched to attract companies to endorse the initiative. Major food brands and retailers such as Carrefour, Coca-Cola, Danone, Nestlé, Starbucks, and Tesco have already joined.
