The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) hosted a scientific colloquium to stimulate discussions on the harmonization of human and ecological risk assessment of chemical mixtures. The colloquium, held from 11-12 September 2014 in Edinburgh, UK, centred on four themes:

  • mechanistic models for hazard assessment
  • harmonization of methods for combined exposure assessment
  • use of alternative methodologies (e.g., in silico modelling, OMICs) in risk assessment
  • application of uncertainty factors and approaches for risk characterization using mechanistic information

Invited speakers from academia and government introduced the themes of the meeting. The lectures were followed by four parallel group discussions. A detailed report on the meeting will follow once EFSA releases its official summary including the expert recommendations, in early 2015.
