In a press release published on June 25, 2019, the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) announced the release of a report outlining the industry association’s “mid-century vision” and setting out “a plausible path towards a prosperous, more sustainable Europe in 2050.” Cefic writes that “based on a thorough analysis and dialogue, we conclude the chemical industry can play a key role in transforming waste into valuable feedstock or new materials and can further integrate with other industrial sectors. As European society moves towards greater circularity, the importance of this role will only grow.” It goes on to highlight chemical recycling as “one of the technologies that will make this possible.” A growing use of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology is also expected to increase efficiency and transparency. Cefic clarifies that “the report is not a forecast but rather a foresight and an invitation to all stakeholders to enter into dialogue with us.” Based on discussions and feedback received, the association says it will regularly update the vision.

In a separate press release published on June 26, 2019, Cefic also launched an action plan for reviewing and improving REACH registration dossiers in the EU. The association plans “to proactively and systematically review and update data in previously submitted REACH registration dossiers” following the European Chemical Agency’s (ECHA) conclusion that many dossiers still require additional information (FPF reported). The action plan is set to run between 2019 and 2026 and comprise of ‘declarations of intent’ signed by companies planning to re-evaluate their dossiers and provide additional information where appropriate. Companies will then report to Cefic on progress made so that an annual update can be shared with stakeholders.
