On March 16, 2015 the European news provider EurActiv published a video explaining the position of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In the short video, Peter Smith, Director Executive of the Product Stewardship Programme at CEFIC, explains that endocrine disruption is an important issue that is currently widely discussed in the political sphere. Identification of EDCs requires clear and science-based criteria, Smith emphasizes. According to CEFIC, such criteria should include potency, severity and adversity. Using well-defined science-based criteria, it will be possible to show whether a substance can and will cause harm. This simple distinction was the focus area of CEFIC’s response to recent public EDC consultation carried out by the European Commission (previously reported on by the FPF). The Commission is now analyzing the input received and shall publish a report in the first half of 2015.
