On April 23, 2021, the law firm Keller and Heckman LLP reported that China’s National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) has opened a public consultation on five substances used in food contact materials (FCMs) until May 13, 2021.

The additive 2-propen-1-aminium, N,N-dimethyl-N-2- propen-1-yl-, chloride (1:1), polymer with 2- propenamide, decarboxylated, hydrochlorides (CAS 913068-94-7) will be allowed in paper and board up to a maximum limit of 0.5 wt % by weight. Further, the agency proposes extending the use of paraffin wax (CAS 8002-74-2) for rubber FCMs up to a maximum concentration of 3 % by weight.

The three polymer resins proposed for food contact application are:

  • 4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, polymer with 1,3- benzenedicarboxylic acid, 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl 1,3-cyclobutanediol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and 1,3-propanediol, 2-methyl at a maximum level of 80 wt% in coatings and coating films;
  • styrene polymer with ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and glycidyl methacrylate at a maximum level of 82.1 wt% in coatings and coating films (CAS 56990-26-2);
  • 2-propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, polymer with methyl 2-methyl-2-propenoate and 2-propenoic acid at a maximum level of 16.3% in coatings and coating films (CAS 39332-53-1)

Comments will be accepted until May 13, 2021.
