In an article published on December 3, 2019, law firm Keller and Heckman LLP (KH) informed about a call for comments on expanded uses for three food contact materials (FCMs) and articles (FCAs), three new resins, and one new food contact substance in China. The call is reported to be from the Chinese National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) and concerns:

Expanded use of the three FCMs and FCAs:

  • polyethylene (CAS 9002-88-4)
  • C.I. solvent violet 36; 1,8-bis[(4-methylphenyl)amino]-9,10-anthracenedione (CAS 82-16-6)
  • octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyphenyl)propionate (CAS 2082-79-3)

Use of the three new resins:

  • 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, polymer with 1,4- benzenedicarboxylic acid and 1,2-ethanediol (CAS 24938-04-3)
  • 2-propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, polymer with butyl 2- methyl-2-propenoate, 2-(chloromethyl)oxirane, ethenylbenzene, ethyl 2-propenoate, 4,4’-(1- methylethylidene)bis[phenol] and 2-propenoic acid, reaction products with 2- (dimethylamino)ethanol (no CAS)
  • 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, polymer with 1,4- benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1,4-butanediol, 1,8- octanedicarboxylic acid and 1,2-ethanediol (CAS 61039-00-7)

Use of the new food contact substance:

  • 2-propenoic acid, ethyl ester, with 2- methyl-2-propenamide (CAS 25085-36-3)

The agency is accepting comments until December 25, 2019.
