On July 9, 2014 the European Commission opened its first call for research into new ways of processing bio-based materials under Horizon 2020. According to an article published by the industry news provider European Plastics News the public-private research partnership will provide €975 million of European Union funds and €2.73 billion from other sources to research projects investigating new bio-based materials. The call includes requests for studies on the pre-treatment of lingo-cellulosic biochemical feedstock, new cellulose pulp based products and the creation of products from heterogeneous biowaste streams.
