On December 17, 2014 the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a new report presenting information on hazardous substances in plastics. The report covers 132 problematic substances or groups of substances. Besides the monomers, the list of substances includes several other categories e.g. plasticizers, stabilizers, flame retardants, organic colorants, solvents, catalysts and blowing agents added to plastics or used during production processes. The report contains the following information about the target substances or substance groups:

  • functional purpose in plastic products
  • occurrence in different plastic products
  • potential for migration from plastics
  • potential for consumer exposure
  • fate by recycling.
