On December 13, 2013 the Commission’s independent Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) published a preliminary opinion on the safety, health and environmental effects and role in antimicrobial resistance of nanosilver. Nanosilver is also used as an antimicrobial in food contact materials. SCENIHR concluded that the new sources of exposure to nanosilver, which may potentially be life-long, may also cause additional effects. However, at this point insufficient data is available to assess the hazard of nanosilver. SCENHR suggests further assessing the potential of silver nanoparticles to induce resistance. The deadline for the public consultation on thedraft opinion is February 2, 2014.
