On January 15, 2018, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added seven new substances of very high concern (SVHC) to the REACH Candidate List. In addition, ECHA updated the entry in the Candidate List for bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7).

The new SVHCs are: 1) Chrysene (CAS 218-01-9), 2) benz[a]anthracene (CAS 56-55-3), 3) cadmium nitrate (CAS 10325-94-7), 4) cadmium hydroxide (CAS 21041-95-2), 5) cadmium carbonate (CAS 513-78-0), 6) 1,6,7,8,9,14,15,16,17,17,18,18-dodecachloropentacyclo[12.2.1.16,9.02,13.05,10]octadeca-7,15-diene (“Dechlorane Plus”TM; covering any of its individual anti- and syn-isomers or any combination thereof) (no CAS number available), and 7) reaction products of 1,3,4-thiadiazolidine-2,5-dithione, formaldehyde and 4-heptylphenol, branched and linear (RP-HP; with ≥0.1% w/w 4-heptylphenol, branched and linear) (no CAS number available). The Candidate List of SVHCs for authorization now includes 181 substances.

BPA’s reason for inclusion in the Candidate List was updated to reflect “endocrine disrupting properties causing adverse effects to the environment.” In December 2017, ECHA’s Member State Committee unanimously agreed on the identification of BPA as an SVHC because of said additional reason (FPF reported).
