In a press release published on October 1, 2019, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that it has submitted a recommendation for 18 substances of very high concern (SVHCs) to be added into the Authorization List (Annex XIV) under REACH. The agency also notes that inclusion should be sure to avoid any regrettable substitutions in the future. A public consultation took place between September and December 2018, and received comments were considered by the Member State Committee before adopting its opinion in June 2019. The list of substances includes six that are within the FACET inventory of food contact chemicals. These six substances are:

  • 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol; bisphenol A (BPA; CAS 80-05-7); added for being toxic for reproduction and having endocrine disrupting properties for human health and environment
  • 2-ethylhexyl 10-ethyl-4,4-dioctyl-7-oxo-8-oxa-3,5-dithia-4-stannatetradecanoate (DOTE; CAS 15571-58-1); added for being toxic for reproduction
  • cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride [1] (MHHPA; CAS 85-42-7); added for having respiratory sensitizing properties
  • hexahydromethylphthalic anhydride [1] (MHHPA; CAS25550-51-0); added for having respiratory sensitizing properties
  • 2-methoxyethanol (CAS 109-86-4); added for being toxic for reproduction
  • 2-ethoxyethanol (CAS 110-80-5); added for being toxic for reproduction
