On November 22, 2013 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published 2 scientific opinions considering the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling technologies EREMA Basic and EREMA Advanced safe for food contact. The evaluations were requested by the responsible ministries in Germany, Italy, Romania, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Post-consumer inputs used in the processes may contain up to 5% non-food grade PET. The following processes using the EREMA technologies were evaluated by EFSA: Octal, Pregis, Sabert, Linpac, ExtruPET, Evertis, Holfeld, Huhtamaki, Snelcore and Re-PET for EREMA Basic and Kruschitz, Vogtland PET, Veolia, ITW Polyrecycling, Texplast, Alimpet and Esox Prodimpex for EREMA Advanced. According to modeled migration with surrogate contaminants, the technologies ensure that potential contamination is below 0.1 μg/kg food derived from the exposure scenario for infants and 0.15 μg/kg for toddlers respectively.
