On May 6 and 7, 2014, respectively the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published the risk assessments on the PET recycling processes “Phoenix-ESPS” and “RPC Cobelplast”. According to the Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF), both recycling processes ensure that the migration of potential contaminants from recycled PET products does not exceed 0.1 µg/kg food. The “Phoenix-ESPS” process is considered safe for the manufacture of materials intended for long term storage at room temperature in contact with all types of foodstuffs, including hot-fill foods. The “RPC Cobelplast” process is considered safe for the manufacture of recycled thermoformed trays and is made from 100% recycled post-consumer PET and intended for long-term storage of all types of food.
