On July 1-2, 2015 the second meeting of the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Food Ingredients and Packaging (FIP) Scientific Network on food contact materials (FCMs) took place in Parma, Italy. Firstly, EFSA’s draft opinion on “Recent developments in the risk assessment of chemicals in food and their potential impact on the safety assessment of substances used in FCMs” was discussed. The draft opinion was open for public consultation from July 7 to October 7, 2015 (FPF reported). Further topics of discussion included guidance for non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and migration testing, the activities of the Council of Europe (CoE), and the European Commission (EC) Joint Research Center’s (JRC) base-line study on European FCM regulation (FPF reported). Finally, EU Member States (MS) UK, Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark presented their activities on e.g. regulation of coatings, migration from elastomers for food contact, and migration of unknown contaminants from paper and board.
