On September 24, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the first meeting of its Working Group (WG) on BPA reevaluation. The meeting was held on September 6-7, 2018, in Parma, Italy.

“The work to be carried out by the WG on BPA reevaluation implies to evaluate all the scientific literature published after 2012 till mid-October 2018 and the data received through EFSA ‘call for data,’ not previously appraised by EFSA, using the EFSA’s protocol for the BPA hazard assessment,” the meeting minutes read.

First, the WG will test the hazard assessment protocol for bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7), developed by EFSA in 2017 (FPF reported), on a set of studies already evaluated by EFSA “to check if the new methodology works adequately.” The outcomes of the trial phase will be published in an EFSA technical report and communicated in a dedicated public event. After the methodology test, the WG will start with the actual reevaluation of BPA safety.

The next meeting of the WG is scheduled to be held on September 28, 2018, by phone conference.
