On October 17, 2013 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published 3 scientific opinions considering poly terephthalate (PET) food grade recycling processes safe for 100% use in the production of materials to be in contact with food. The first scientific opinion considers the processes “Re-PET”, “Etimex”, “Dannemann”, “Dentis”, “PRT”, “Tec-Folien”, “Linpac”, “Fellinger A flakes”,“TDX” and “HVZ” , all based on the previously evaluated Starlinger Decon technology, as safe for food contact. The evaluations were requested by the relevant ministries in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Under the condition that the recycled PET does not contain more than 5% non-food grade materials, the process is considered to limit migration of unknown contaminants to below 0.1 µg/kg food. The other 2 scientific opinions address requests from the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumption and the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. They consider the processes “CPR Superclean PET” and “4PET” safe for use in food contact materials (FCMs), with effective decontamination limiting potential migration levels below 0.1 µg/kg. All processes are intended for FCMs used at room temperature without hot fill.
