On April 24, 2020, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a draft framework for the development of protocols used for its scientific assessments. The framework is described as being intended for EFSA’s staff and external experts, but the agency writes that it may be useful also for contractors working on projects outsourced by EFSA or by applicants submitting dossiers on regulated products. Split into two parts, the framework addresses (i) problem formulation and (ii) methods used for addressing the problem. EFSA emphasizes that defining methods for the assessment at the beginning of the process helps to prevent bias and avoid hypothesizing after results are known.
