On July 16, 2014 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion considering an active substance based on crosslinked polyacrylic acid and sodium salt safe for food contact. The request for evaluation was filed by the German Ministry of Consumer Protection and Food Safety. EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) concluded that migration of the substance used as a liquid absorber for fresh and frozen foods including meat, fruits and vegetables will not exceeded safe limits under normal use conditions. The substance is placed in an absorbent pad and does not come into direct contact with the food.
