In October 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published 10 scientific opinions assessing the safety of processes used to recycle post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into food contact materials (FCM). The evaluated processes include:

POLY RECYCLING PET DIRECT IV+;

Sharpak Bridgewater, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Marcato, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

V & T Trade, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Pinaform, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

PETman, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Reco-Kavala, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Ferrarelle, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Veripack Embalajes, based on Starlinger Decon technology;

Poly Recycling, based on recoSTAR PET FG technology;

The CEP Panel considers all evaluated processes to produce recycled PET that “is not considered of safety concern” and can be “used at up to 100% for the manufacture of materials and articles for [food] contact” under specified conditions.
