On August 12, 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) agreed on the minutes of the twelfth meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates, which was held on July 30-31, 2019, by phone conference.
During the meeting, the working group discussed revisions made in response to received comments on EFSA’s draft assessment of five phthalates (FPF reported) following a public consultation. “Suggestions for addressing the remaining comments in the technical report of the public consultation were further elaborated and agreed,” and tasks were distributed to the experts to continue the revisions during the next meeting.
In its earlier draft opinion, EFSA established a group tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 50 µg/kg body weight (bw) per day for the four phthalates di-butylphthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), butylbenzylphthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7), and di-isononylphthalate (DINP, CAS 28553-12-0). The phthalate di-isodecylphthalate (DIDP, CAS 26761-40-0) was assigned its own TDI of 150 µg/kg bw per day (FPF reported). The next WG meetings will be held on August 12, 2019 for the exposure subgroup and on August 29, 2019 for the toxicology subgroup.
