On December 12, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the fourth meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates which was held on November 22, 2018, by phone conference.

During the meeting, the WG’s subgroup on exposure was informed about the feedback received at the CEP Panel’s 3rd plenary meeting on October 23-25, 2018 (FPF reported). The WG’s proposals on how to consider the feedback in its draft scientific opinion on safety of dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7), diisononyl phthalate (DINP, CAS 28553-12-0), and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP, CAS 26761-40-0) for use in food contact plastics were also presented.

The subgroup then discussed and noted changes for the parts of the draft opinion that concern exposure assessment. Further, the subgroup addressed “[e]xposure scenarios for different age groups as well as methodologies for combined exposure assessment.”

The next meeting of the phthalates WG is scheduled to be held on December 17, 2018, by phone conference.
