On July 7, 2015 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced that their Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavorings and Processing Aids (CEF) has launched a public consultation on a draft scientific opinion on “recent developments in the risk assessment of chemicals in food and their potential impact on the safety assessment of substances used in food contact materials (FCMs)”. The draft scientific opinion discusses and proposes improvement in estimating consumer exposure, estimating FCM migration into food, and testing toxicity. Also, non-testing methods such as read-across and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for the safety evaluation of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) are considered. The draft opinion is not intended as a guidance document. But together with a report on the public consultation it shall provide the European Commission (EC) with a scientific basis for discussion among risk managers on possible implications on risk management. All stakeholders and interested parties can submit written comments by October 7, 2015.
