In an article published on December 14, 2017, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced the publication of the final protocol for the hazard (re-)assessment of bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7). The protocol was adopted by EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavorings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) end of November 2017 (FPF reported), following several changes made in response to the public consultation (FPF reported) and workshop (FPF reported) held on the topic. EFSA now also released a report summarizing the outcomes of the public consultation.

As a next step, a “new working group” will be set up at EFSA to “start collecting scientific papers and data” in 2018. The results of the Consortium Linking Academic and Regulatory Insights on BPA Toxicity (CLARITY-BPA) studies (FPF reported) will also be included once the report is available. EFSA also announced that it “will continue to liaise with the European Chemicals Agency [ECHA] and national scientific advisory bodies in EU Member States who are also working on BPA.”
